DIEGO Martin North-East MP Colm Imbert has been ordered to pay over $55 million to Emile Elias’ construction firm, NH International (Caribbean) Limited, owed for work done on the Grenada National Stadium construction project in 1997.
Justice Peter Rajkumar made the order yesterday after delivering a 108-page ruling in the legal battle between Elias and Imbert, which has been waged in the local, regional and international courts.
The NHIC executive chairman (Elias) accused Imbert of reneging on a contractual agreement and of refusing to pay millions owed to him. He filed a lawsuit against the former Works and Transport Minister’s construction firm ICS (Grenada) Limited, Clico Investment Bank (CIB) and National Stadium Project (Grenada) Corporation (NS) — a company Imbert was said to have formed to hold the lease on the stadium.
The lawsuit sought payment of a debt of $17 million (estimated to be worth $55 million when added to interest), representing part of a larger sum of money set aside by CIB to pay NHIC for work on the Grenada National Stadium project.
In a statement after the ruling, Elias said Imbert’s attempt to “prevent NHIC from enjoying the fruits of its work” had finally failed. He said early next week, he plans to explore all options available to have Imbert removed from Parliament and will also write the Government of Grenada asking for a full forensic investigation of the entire finances of the project.
