According to a police report, at about 2.20 am, gardener Devanand Ramdass was asleep in the bedroom of his Blanchisseuse Road, Arima home next to his 34-year-old wife when they were both awakened by the sound of loud banging on the front door of the house.

Two men forced their way into the house and entered the couple’s bedroom. One of the intruders pushed Ramdass’ wife to the side while the other pointed a shotgun at the gardener’s face. A shot rang out and Ramdass slumped to his bed, blood pouring from his face which was almost blown-off by the shotgun blast.
